Are you one of the women who shells out big bucks for cosmetic treatments? I’m not referring to minor cosmetic enhancements, but rather to more extensive beauty treatments like lash extensions.
Who wouldn’t want to look stunning with a set of thick lashes? Take Beyoncé, for example. She is a sophisticated celebrity who takes great care of her appearance. Although her mink lashes are highly sought after, we mere mortals cannot afford them.
The Truth About Lash Extensions
In hindsight, the first question I should have Googled was, “How long does it take after getting eyelash extensions for eyelashes to grow back?”
Yes, months is the appropriate response. The consequences were disastrous because false eyelashes are adhered to your natural lashes. I was left with teeny stubs that made me appear abnormal. You see, we usually shed 1 to 5 lashes daily. We lose about 20% of our eyelashes in two weeks. Between 60 and 90 days pass between the lash fall out and growth cycles.
If your eyelashes fall out naturally, they will regrow over time and, with some assistance from lash serums, even more quickly. The entire cycle is disrupted by lash extensions, though. Your natural lashes are destroyed by the chemicals that seep into the follicles, and the constant fill-ins will slow down the growth of your natural lashes.
The Cost
I ceased receiving lash extensions primarily because I was unable to keep up with my appointments. Week after week, the sessions got easier. My natural lashes were already suffering because of the fill-ins.
A typical lash extension procedure lasts about 2 hours, and you need to get fill-ins every 4 weeks, which take about 45 minutes. However, if your lash-shedding cycle is quicker than average, you might need to visit the salon after just two weeks. My inability to balance my personal and professional lives resulted from the appointments, which turned into a chore. I referred to it as my beauty life because it was destroying my more significant lives.
After the 5th fill-in, I said to myself, “A facial or a massage would have been much more soothing.” Unfortunately, the harm was done, and I was left with only the ruins of my lashes.
The six fill-ins I received over the following few months cost me $65 each. My initial lash extension cost me $150. Just for your eyelashes, can you imagine spending about $600? Well, I did.
How Long Can Extensions Be Weared?
I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to stop them forever because I know how it feels to be in denial about losing (almost) all of your lashes. Madeline confirms that “It’s not a bad idea to wear extensions for a special occasion.”
Lash extensions are designed to last 6-8 weeks, falling off naturally when our hair cycle reaches “The telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle,” says Madeline.
If you do want to have lash extensions part of your beauty regime permanently then Madeline suggests to “Give your follicles time to rest and heal by alternating your months by 6-8 weeks on and 6-8 weeks off.”
The Solution To Quitting
1. A Lash Serum: I discovered a company I’d never heard of before, EyEnvy, after letting my last set of extensions fall off naturally. A ground-breaking eyelash and eyebrow serum that increases lash length, volume, and thickness.
Don’t misunderstand me; I’ve tried a lot of serums, even with lash extensions, and I’ve never had results as good as I have with EyEnvy.
2. An Eyeliner: Your eyes may appear to be wider than they actually are if you use eyeliner that has wings. For months, I’ve been using KVD Vegan Beauty’s Tattoo Liquid Liner, and I love how simple it is to use.
After years of not using eyeliner due to lash extensions, I was initially concerned that I wouldn’t be able to do so, but the sturdy tip prevented any mistakes. It’s understandable why KVD eyeliner is one of Sephora’s top sellers.
3. False Eyelashes: False eyelashes are great for giving your eyes a lift and making them appear wider. They’re also great to use when you need to cover up the fact that you don’t have any eyelashes left after years of abuse.
I was extremely fortunate to find Ardell’s Naked Lashes. It took me a few tries to get the dexterity I needed for them to look as natural as they could without coming undone by night’s end.
I had no trouble putting on the false lashes from The Quick Flick. This is the foolproof solution, regardless of your level of experience applying lashes! You can apply the Adhesive Eyeliner just like you would a liquid liner and then add the lashes directly on top without using any glue. You and a perfect finish up to 30 times, no magnets, no messy glue!
4. A Nude/Beige Liner: I chose an Anastasia Beverly Hills nude liner because I find white eyeliner for the water line to look a little unnatural. You can create the appearance of wider, more naturally-shaped eyes by applying it along your bottom water line.
5. A Mascara: Better Than Sex by Too Faced really works, to put it mildly, and I use it now that my eyelashes have grown back. For a dramatic effect that makes me reconsider ever needing to get permanent lash extensions again, I applied it to both my top and bottom lashes.
6. Highlighter: We all know to add highlighter to the high points of our faces, but you should also add highlighter to your brow bone to widen your eyes. YSL Touche Éclat is the best, and I keep buying it because I’ve been using it for what seems like ages.
Negative Effects On Natural Eyelashes
Even though eyelash extensions can up your makeup game, there may be side effects that you will have to deal with for months.
Your natural lashes may suffer severe damage as a result of eyelash extensions. Particularly for those who regularly get eyelash extensions, the harm can be quite severe.
One of the main causes of my stopping eyelash extensions was this. Average in both length and thickness, my natural eyelashes. I made the decision to get eyelash extensions to lengthen and fill out my lashes.
I achieved the look I was going for in the short term, but I couldn’t take the chance of having to deal with lash fallout.
Always having your lash extensions applied by professionals is one suggestion to lower the possibility of harming your natural lashes.
Although this is excellent knowledge, the process still entails gluing false eyelashes made of various materials to your natural lashes.
You might still experience some undesirable effects, regardless of how carefully the process is carried out. The products used might obstruct the growth of natural eyelashes.
Fallout may result from lash extensions that develop clusters and clumps due to buildup or poor application.
Final Thoughts
While getting eyelash extensions has many advantages, such as making you look more natural, requiring less effort to get ready, and of course making you feel super glam, there are also many drawbacks, which eventually led me to stop getting them. The maintenance of cleaning and getting regular fills, in addition to the high cost, completely turned me off to the service. I also don’t miss them at all because there are so many fantastic options available today.
